Bookmark Managers: Programs vs. Web Services

March 4, 2009

This rapid expansion of web resources raises some new issues for all of us. How could you possibly remember; after a long search, the address of that crucial web page? How will you be able to return to the page without repeating a tedious web search through hundreds and thousands of pages?

The answer is obvious, you need a program that will allow you to easily create and manage a database of web resources. Of course, this database must be quick, intuitive and convenient to use.

One way to resolve this problem is to use your web browser’s bookmarks feature. Bookmarks are a popular term for the lists of web page links stored in web browsers, although they are called “Favorites” in Internet Explorer. These web browser bookmark systems have some severe limitations. For example, each bookmark list will only be compatible with a specific web browser. If you use several different web browsers you will have to manage the bookmark system in each one. Web browser bookmark lists may become cumbersome to use when your bookmark list grows beyond a few items. Important features missing from web browser bookmark systems include:

- Powerful search functions;
- Synchronization of bookmarks between different computers;
- Detection and automatic deletion of duplicate bookmarks;
- Checks for availability of bookmarked web pages.

Specialist programs and web services that store and organize bookmarks are now available and they offer a comprehensive solution to these problems. They are called bookmark managers or bookmark organizers (in this article both terms have the same meaning). The difference between online (web-based) bookmark managers and standalone bookmark managers is in the location of the stored bookmark database and in the way that the database is accessed. Web services called “online bookmark managers” store the user’s bookmarks on their remote servers and their bookmarks may be accessed from any browser. A standalone bookmark organizer is simply a program which runs on your local computer. It stores the bookmark database on a hard disk and allows access through its own built-in interface.

Here are some examples of web-based bookmark managers:

- KeepBookmarks.com – http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com
- LinkaGoGo – http://www.linkagogo.com
- Murl – http://murl.com

You can find more links to online bookmark managers here:

Bookmark management software can be found here:

- Link Commander – http://www.resortlabs.com/bookmark-manager/linkcommander.php
- Linkman – http://www.outertech.com/index.php?_charisma_page=product&id=5
- Powermarks – http://www.kaylon.com/power.html

Any software catalog will contain plenty of links to bookmark managers. For example: http://www.snapfiles.com/shareware/misctools/swurlorg.html

Offline and online bookmark managers each have relative advantages and disadvantages due to their differing methods of database storage and access.

An online bookmark manager does not depend on any particular computer. If you have an Internet connection you can access your bookmarks from any computer in the world. You don’t need to synchronize the bookmarks on your home/work PC or notebook because they will all access the same bookmarks database. With an online bookmark manager you can access your bookmarks even when you are in an Internet café! Another advantage is that most of them are free. They will cost you time, though, because you access your bookmarks via an Internet connection. More importantly, most of the web interfaces are not as convenient as software based bookmark managers and don’t have so many useful features. For example, they can’t search for and delete duplicate database items. Here are some of the other potential disadvantages of using online bookmark managers:

1) You risk losing all your bookmarks if, for some reason, the web service closes down.

2) There is a danger of unauthorized access to your private bookmarks because your bookmark manager server may not be secure against hackers.

The advantages and disadvantages of offline bookmark managers are almost exactly opposite to those of online bookmark managers and will be discussed next.

Any offline bookmark manager is tied to the computer on which it is installed. It stores your bookmarks in a database (which usually has its own proprietary format) that is located on one of the hard drives. To use your bookmarks on several computers you will need to install the program on each computer and find a way to synchronize the bookmark databases. Most of the currently available bookmark organizers do have a database synchronization feature. Also, there are now devices with high data transfer speeds (e.g. flash drives) that can store an independent bookmark database and allow it to be shared between several computers.

Another disadvantage of bookmark manager software is the price. There are some free programs out there, but they don’t have a great number of features and technical support is often weak or unavailable. The programs that require payment are inexpensive, though, usually costing from $20 to $40. The user licenses of such programs will normally allow you to install the programs on all of your computers.

In my opinion, the disadvantages of standalone bookmark managers are minimal compared to their advantages. The location of both the program and database on the same computer guarantees you fast access to your bookmarks and high security from hacker attacks. The convenience of the program interface and the number of useful features are limited only by the power of the computer and the skills of developers.

So, how should you organize your bookmarks? Should you use an online or offline bookmark manager? I don’t think there is a definite answer. It all depends on your preferences and working habits. If mobility is your priority, if you travel often and wish to access your bookmarks no matter where you are and from any computer, then you should consider an online bookmark manager. If speed, ease of use, security and functionality is most important to you then an offline bookmark manager might be a better choice.

How to get tons and tons of Digg?

March 4, 2009

How to get tons and tons of Digg? This is something I been doing since long time ago. I have had great amount of success with trick.

Best way to get on frontpage of Digg is to get 30-40 Diggs within few minutes after the submission. Which can only happen if your story is really amazing and out of this world or if you have tons of friends and you PM them and they all Digg it. Remember I told you, to get ideas from newsletters and stuff and find out what is the news and what is the buzz around? Well this is where it comes into play. You can actually rewrite the stuff that you got in your email and put it in your own blog and then Digg it, if the story is good enough it will get on frontpage and it will get you tons of friend adds also. This works very well if you are a good writer and can re write articles real fast, with pictures and stuff..you can also give the direct link to the site for a while just so you get popular around Digg.

The best way to get to frontpage of Digg without any friends is, to go to www.youtube.com and find videos that got tons of views but never got diggs, al you gotta do then is put the video on your blog and then Digg it, I have had very good success with it, you can even resubmit some of the old videos, just download the famous Digg video, upload it again and Digg it again.

Here are some of my final touches and methods I been using for a long time now. This is the first time I am sharing this method. I am sure you guys will use it and exploit it..

1.Backlink to your Digg profile -> Ya this is my favorite method, build backlinks to your own Digg profile, you can do that through social bookmarking, blog comment. Here is a basic guide.

A.Social Bookmark your Digg account, from all famous websites, or you can pay someone around DP do social bookmark your own Digg profile.

B.Find blogs that can get you an easy backlink by posting a comment, best way is to find blogs in a topic that you are good at. And people usually always allow a link in a comment when they see www.digg.com, but basically you will be leaving backlink to your own Digg account.

C.Create a blog and talk all junk in it, you can get articles from Ezine and change words here and there and upload it to your blogger account. In the bloglink section backlink to your Digg Account with an anchor of your choice. I use my own name lol or random words. Now google might deindex your site if you copy paste ezine stuff so the best way is, to write 5-10 posts by yourself talking totally junk stuff and then in link section link back to your account. You can do this from wordpress, xanga, scribd, hubpages, squidoo and tons more, I cant share all of them but these are few famous ones. To get these blogs crawled just keep pinging them every 24 hours, you can do that by going to www.kping.com, use some of your techniques to get it crawled and indexed I cant share much. You gotta get your Digg account some PR lol..

2. Deadliest METHOD – This is my favorite method. I cannot 100% guarantee that this method still works but I think nobody knows about it and I do not think Digg ever did anything to fix this issue, in fact I think Digg doesnt even think someone would be that PRO to exploit this lol but here it is Just for you people lol –

If you go to your profile and scroll down you can see your account stats, number of Diggs, submits, how many stories you made popular and how many people viewed your account. Now you won’t believe me but you can trigger that number and for some reason people add you as friend and digg your stories if this number is way to high, they think you are famous and you get tons of visits or something. I am not sure how the logic works here but basically if your profile view stats are high people add you in friends and become more friendly with you. Its weird I know but basically its like how many people visited your profile. Now what you can do to get this stats high is actually buy fake traffic and send all the traffic to your Digg URL and in no time you will have thousands and thousands of views. So when people check your profile they will see you got tons of views and this helps for some reason to get easy friends.

An examination of the social network called Digg and how it can be used as part

March 4, 2009

An examination of the social network called Digg and how it can be used as part of a successful search engine strategy.

One of the newest places to submit articles that you have written is Digg. This is a huge social network whose readers actually despise anything that looks like marketing. You probably won’t last two minutes on this site, which has a “burial” feature that kicks overt displays of advertising right off the sight. However if you are very clever about the way you position yourself on Digg you can use it as a marketing tool to bring more visitors to your site and that may mean potential link partners and advertisers. If you are successful at posting writing on Digg then you will likely experience a ton of traffic being brought to your site.

Digg is all about user powered content. Everything is submitted and voted on by the digg community. After you submit content, other people read your submission and Digg what they like best. If your story is popular and receives enough Digg vote, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of visitors to see. So how can you turn this into an SEO tool?

The first challenge is to get people to give a Digg vote to your posting. This means having an article on the top page or linking to someone who has a story on the top page. However even after you manage that you need to have a fantastic title and summary or the savvy, marketing hating readers on Digg may not even glance at any URL that is attached.

The main way that Digg can be part of a good SEO strategy is in driving a lot of traffic to your site quickly by getting in the top ten read articles on the first page of the site. This creates the kind of buzz and credibility for your site that just cannot be bought using keyword articles only.

Social bookmarking is a way for internet users to store, classify, share, and search Internet bookmarks.

March 4, 2009

Social bookmarking is a way for internet users to store, classify, share, and search Internet bookmarks. In 2005 and 2006, social bookmarking sites, such as del.icio.us, Diigo, Furl, Ma.gnolia, Netvouz, and StumbleUpon became popular. Sites like reddit, Digg, Newsvine, and the new Netscape portal apply social bookmarking to news items. In 2007, IBM announced plans to enter the social software market.

There are a variety of ways to use bookmarks to improve your overall site popularity. What I personally like about social bookmarks is that it’s easy to do and very similar to other optimization methods I use. The way it works is as follows: A user registers for a social bookmarking site. Once they have an account, they browse the internet. When the individual identifies a webpage or piece of content they want to share with others, they bookmark it. Once that content is bookmarked, the bookmark site keeps a record of the bookmark and waits to see if others bookmark the same content or website.

When others bookmark or vote for the same content, that content increases in popularity and the social book marking site ranks it higher than other content on their site. Some of these bookmark sites also let you see the bookmarks of others. That’s what makes it a “social” bookmark. Not only is the general web populace rating Internet content collectively, but they can also see what others are book marking.

What’s even better is that you can use a site like Social Poster (free) found at http://socialposter.com/generator.php to post multiple bookmarks from one location. You will need to register for each of these sites, but once you do the submission process is simple.

After book marking your home page on each of these sites, consider book marking specific content of channel level pages of your site. Creating deep links into your site can enhance your overall Google rankings. And of course, make sure to use the proper link text in your site title and description.

One final word on social bookmarking. Now that you know how to bookmark your site, the next logical step is to make it easy for others to bookmark your site. To do this, simply add a Social Bookmark applet (free) to your site by visiting AddThis.com. They offer a small piece of Javascript you can add to your site in the form of a button.

When users click on the Bookmark button, they can select their specific book marking tool and book mark your content. This makes the process of book marking simple and easy to do.n its own terms.

Social bookmark, an Internet user can bookmark his or her favorite website

March 4, 2009

Through a social bookmark, an Internet user can bookmark his or her favorite website or an online article and store, organize and share it with other users online. These social bookmarks are open to public and may be accessed by all who are interested in seeing what you have bookmarked. With the maturity and popularity of these services, various features have been added to them like rating and commenting on the bookmarks, importing and exporting them from browsers and e-mailing them. As far as creation of high-quality search engines is concerned, the system of social bookmarking provide various advantages over the traditional programmed classification and resource location software like a search engine spider.

All the tag-based classification of websites is done by humans and not by software programs who generally do not understand the resource content. Web spiders notice and index only popular web pages but people can find those who are not even found by the web spiders. In addition to that, software programs rank the web pages depending upon the number of links pointing to them but social bookmarking is done depending upon the number of times the users have bookmarked the web pages, the feature which can be extremely helpful for the end users.

For the Internet users, social bookmarking system can be extremely useful as a means to access consolidated sets of bookmarks through different computers, organize various bookmarks and share them with user contacts.

Some of the great ways of social bookmarking are:

• Choosing a network: Selecting a network of social bookmarking only after proper and extensive research can be really useful. You must choose one of the popular networks only as it will attract more web visitors in comparison to the less popular ones.

• Signing up: After selecting a popular network of social bookmarking, sign up on it and take advantages from it. In order to avoid problems in future, read the basic rules and strictly follow them.

• Categorizing: Categorize your bookmarks depending upon their group like hobbies, recipes and science. Keeping them clean and simple can help in preparing right takes on your bookmarks.

• Tagging: Tagging the websites that you visit can be helpful in providing useful information to the network. Therefore, it will make your bookmarked page popular and well known in your entire network.

• Adding social bookmark links to the website: This will attract visitors to the site and help in getting more web traffic.

• Making it popular: By bookmarking interesting and important information and allowing the readers to make use of them can really make your website extremely popular. The more useful the content of your website, the more popular it will be.

• Using it as search engines: Social bookmarked web pages can also serve as a search engine and may work even better than web spiders.

• Submitting the website to the social bookmarks: This will be helpful in getting more web visitors on the bookmarked website.

• Helping the visitors to re-visit: You can help your visitors to come again to your site by allowing them to bookmark your website.
